A wide range of CCTV equipment from Norbain has been installed at various Connex rail stations. Shown here: a jvc 1380 camera with vandal-resistant housing at Faversham station. A wide range of CCTV equipment from Norbain SD, the UK's largest supplier, has been installed at various Connex rail stations by Nu-Tron Security, as part of a major refurbishment. The equipment is used to monitor areas such as car parks and underpasses in Rainham, Newington, Sittingbourne, Taynham and Faversham stations in Kent, and Arundel, Amberley, Billingshurst and Christs Hospital stations in West Sussex. 60 JVC 1380 cameras with vandal-resistant housings have been purchased from Norbain in total, with the size of each station dictating the number used, from two cameras in the smaller to 19 in the larger stations. These particular cameras were chosen because they operate on 24 V a.c. which allows for a longer cable run without a voltage drop and the subsequent loss in image quality. Standalone CCTV systems, the camera images are fed back to control rooms which house Robot multiplexers, Sony monitors and Panasonic VCRs, also purchased from Norbain. The control rooms are generally in the stations themselves, while others are linked to a single West Sussex station, Pulborough, via ISDN where the cameras are monitored. The equipment was pre-specified and tenders for groups of four, five and six Connex stations put out at a time. Nutron Security was appointed to install the CCTV system by Newcom Construction, who won a number of these tenders. Paul Hayes of Nutron Security was not only pleased to win the contract from Newcom Construction but was also very pleased with the end result. "Although the equipment was pre-specified there was still a lot of work involved in ensuring the equipment performed to its full potential. This involved rigorous testing of the CCTV equipment and systems when they were in place, including undertaking proofs of resolution and ensuring all the photographic shots of the camera views were officially signing off." This work was completed within the short time-scale required and was operational for the Faversham open day to everyone's relief.
